A year after Costa Rica and China signed a Joint Action Plan for Cooperation – 2016-2020, Costa Rican exporters are still waiting to sell their products across the Pacific.

The Costa Rican Chamber of Exporters (CADEXCO) decided to push for action so that producers in Costa Rica can take advantage of the favorable conditions offered under this special agreement before more time elapses.

CADEXCO held four strategic meetings to identify existing export opportunities, and begin to outline strategies.

The first of these meetings was between CADEXCO’s Asia Committee and Costa Rica’s Ambassador to China, Patricia Rodríguez, in which the chamber discussed their desire to increase trade opportunities with China.

Other key meetings were held with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Livestock and Agriculture (MAG), and the Ministry of Technology (MICIT) to encourage actions to strengthen exporters.

A central focus of the meeting was to expedite procedures and requirements for exporting melon, frozen produce, and vegetables and fruits to China. Both the MAG and the Costa Rican Ambassador to China pledged to follow up with the Chinese authorities on the issue.

Among the other opportunities under this agreement that stand to benefit exporters include the creation of an Agricultural Technology Research Center. Both the MAG and MICIT are working to implement the project which would be a boon for agricultural exporters.

CADEXCO also requested under the agreement that Costa Rica have access to high-yield and pest-resistant seeds which are used in China – but did not mention for which types of crops.

The chamber urged the public and private sectors to cooperate to make full use of the opportunities extended under this cooperation agreement while it is still in effect.
