A brightly colored male toucan that suffered a mutilated beak after being attacked by thuggish youths in Costa Rica is getting a new home in Alajuela.

Wildlife rescue experts at Rescate Animal Zoo Ave, located in La Garita, recently announced that Grecia will be housed in a new enclosure where it will have plenty of room to fly around, climb branches, hide, enjoy the sun, feed, practice bird calls, etc.

The enclosure will measure seven meters in height, ten meters across, and nine meters deep. The wildlife experts will build the enclosure around a tropical forest patch for the purpose of recreating a natural habitat as much as possible since Grecia cannot return to the wild.

Meanwhile, the story of Grecia and its recovery with a 3D printed prosthesis to fit its broken beak, is currently going around the international film festival circuit.

As previously reported by The Costa Rica Star, TOUCAN NATION is a film directed by Prime Time Emmy®-winning filmmaker Paula Heredia (‘In Memoriam: New York City, 9/11/01′), TOUCAN NATION chronicles each step of the journey as the the Zoo Ave center works to improve Grecia’s life. The film includes Charles W. Hull of 3D Systems, known as the father of 3D printing, who collaborates with a group of Costa Rican product designers, dentists and engineers on the best design and construction for Grecia’s prosthetic beak.

TOUCAN NATION has already screened at the prestigious Sheffield Doc Fest, and will also be part of the American Film Festival in Washington this week.

‘What happened to this beautiful bird was horrific,’ says John Hoffman, EVP Documentaries and Specials for Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, and Science Channel. ‘But this atrocity inspired people to work together to save an animal’s life. We are proud to present this moving story and hope it sparks a larger conversation about animal welfare.’

Grecia’s story will be shown by the Discovery Channel and Animal Planet on August 2 at 10 PM U.S. Eastern Time.
