Although Canadian businessman Ryan Craig Piercy Bate is reportedly back in the safety of his home in Heredia, there seem to be more doubts than conclusions related to his month-long disappearance. Some news sources reporting on this mysterious case in Costa Rica mention the possibility of a kidnapping event which came to an end after a ransom payment was made to alleged captors; however, other sources are not rushing to this conclusion.

According to a report published by daily tabloid Diario Extra, Mr. Piercy took a taxi from Downtown San Jose to his residence, where he knocked on the door after midnight on Saturday. Minutes later, detectives from the Office of Judicial Investigations (Spanish initials: OIJ) were notified about the sudden appearance of Mr. Piercy at home.

On Sunday morning, two agents assigned to the kidnappings and abductions unit of OIJ drove Mr. Piercy to a prosecutor’s office in San Jose. The report from Diario Extra concludes with information given in confidence to that tabloid, which would indicate suspicion by OIJ analysts about the possibility of an associate of Mr. Piercy being the mastermind of the kidnapping and the alleged ransom payment of $500K. As previously reported by The Costa Rica Star, this case at some point included a “proof-of-life” video, a partial ransom payment made, and even a curious demand to make the payment in Bitcoin, a virtual currency that could help agents track down the alleged kidnappers.

National newspaper La Nacion is short on details about this case, and at no point is the possibility of a kidnapping mentioned by this news source.

National TV news network Teletica, which often works with Grupo Nacion on media matters, mentions that Mr. Piercy’s family made two payments to the alleged captors, but no further details were provided as to the amounts or how the payments were actually made. During a February 17^th TV newscast, Teletica indicated that Mr. Piercy’s name appears in about 70 business entities registered in Costa Rica, and that his net worth was estimated at $1 million. Teletica concludes with a report about Mr. Piercy being evaluated by forensic physicians in advance of further questioning by prosecutors.
