Costa Rica is in the sixth position in the world among the preferred destinations by expats according to a study carried out by InterNations, an expat network that provides information on destinations around the world and assessment on Visas, work permits, lodging, international schools etc.

The study was applied electronically to 14, 272 expats of 174 different nationalities and that reside in 191 countries around the world. The indicators of the study were: quality of life, ease of settling, personal finances, work abroad and family life.

The first place was taken by Taiwan, followed by Malta, Ecuador, Mexico and New Zealand, while the last three positions went to Kuwait, Greece, and Nigeria

Among the reasons mentioned by expats for wanting to live in other countries they mentioned:

Wanting a Better Quality of life: Costa Rica ranked fourth in the world in this category, top 3 countries were Uganda, Cyprus and Malta, Philippines ranked in fifth position.

Wanting to live in a particular country: A 6% of the participants said they moved to a determined destination because they wanted to live in that particular country. Costa Rica was second among expats that had chosen the country for this reason. 91% of the expats that wanted to live here said they were satisfied with their life and 52% expect to live in Costa Rica permanently.  Retirement in Costa Rica

When it comes to the study indicators, Costa Rica was in fifth position when it comes to the quality of life ranking, under Taiwan, Austria, Japan and Spain, this indicator takes into consideration: options of entertainment, health and wellness, traveling and transportation, security, personal happiness.

Ease of settling: Costa Rica ranked second after Mexico that took first place this indicator evaluates: feeling welcome, kindness, easiness to make friends and language.

Working abroad: Costa Rica earned the 28th position and this took into consideration: work and career, work-life balance and employment stability.

Family Life: Ranked in position 22 considering: availability of care for children and education, cost of education and child care, quality of education and family wellness.
