Striker Johan Venegas from Costa Rica scored the best goal thus far in the 100th anniversary of the world’s oldest football tournament at the federation level, but the victory against Colombia was hardly a cause for celebration.

The National Men’s Football Team of Costa Rica, affectionately known as La Sele, obtained its sole victory at Copa America Centenario against one of the favorite teams to win the tournament; however, it was the final match. The fate of La Sele had already been defined with a victory by the United States over Paraguay the day before.

Both national teams were relaxed for their final match in Group A, and Colombia was the clear favorite until two minutes after kickoff, when Johan Venegas of the Major League Soccer club Montreal Impact received a fly pass from midfielder Celso Borges. In a single motion, Venegas elegantly turned and fired a strong, mid-range rocket to the top right corner of the goalposts.

Highlights of Venegas’ goal have already been played and replayed on major televisions sports networks such as BBC, Fox and ESPN. It has been labeled the most enjoyable goal of Copa America thus far.

Colombia later evened the score as the manager ordered players to switch to a more offensive strategy, particularly when Venegas dribbled past a defender with a tunnel trick play before delivering an easy cross that resulted in another goal.

The 3-2 victory for Costa Rica is a bittersweet affair. Despite winning against a national team that is highly rated by FIFA, the early exit from Copa America is being blamed on strategic mistakes of not thinking offensively against Paraguay and being too careless in the match against the U.S.

Copa America continues with United States advancing at the top of Group A, followed by Colombia.
