The fourth date of the “Kölbi” National Surf Tournament is happening this weekend in Playa Guiones,Nosara,Guanacaste.

Jason Torres from Jacó took the first place of the open competition during the third date in Santa Teresa de Cóbano which was held on April 22-23; Zulay Martínez was the winner in the female open category.

The event will also offer concerts for the entertainment of the attending public.

Friday 12: Opening act, concert with national band Los Ajenos 8 p.m
Saturday 13: Competitions begin at 7 a.m. and extend through 5 p.m., closure at 8 p.m. with concert by Reggae Luvers.
Sunday 14: Finals 7 a.m. – 3 p.m.

On other surfing news, the Costa Rica National Surfing Team trainer, Jim Hogan, announced yesterday the six surfers that will be representing Costa Rica at the ISA World Surfing Games that take place May 20-28 in France, these are: Jason Torres (Jacó), Jair Pérez (Jacó), Leonardo Calvo (Puntarenas) and Anthoy Fillingim (Santa Teresa); the female representatives picked are Leilani McGonagle (Pavones) and Emily Gussoni (Jacó).

The news of the selected male participants was not taken well by local surfer Maykol Torres, who posted a video on his Facebook page showing his discontent with the selection. The surfer who is third in the national rankings behind Jason Torres and Jair Pérez, feels it was unfair that he was not picked to be part of the team and expressed that some of the competitors were picked only because they have the “right kind of friendships” in the federation.

The Costa Rica Surfing Federation through a press release stated: “The Federation is surprised with the aggressive reaction the athlete had in social media. Other trainers have taken him into consideration in previous years and he has participated in Junior World Championships, ISA Open, and Central American tournaments in the past. He, like the other 16 pre-selected athletes agreed to respect 100% the criteria of the trainer, Jim Hogan; he will probably receive a strong sanction from the Federation”

The press release also explains the Federation has provided financial aid for Torres in the past and his position is considered unsportsmanlike.

In order to select the members of the National Team, the Federation and the trainer take into consideration the national ranking, the participation in international tournaments and the results obtained during the training sessions.

Trainer Jim Hogan will be training the team this weekend at Nosara.
