As October approaches the different events organized to raise cancer awareness and collect funds that go towards fighting breast cancer and other forms of this illness make an appearance. During this month of October three races will take place in Costa Rica:  Anna Ross Foundation Race, Cruzada Avon (Avon Crusade) and Las Mujeres Corremos (Women Run).

These events have become a tradition in Costa Rica, the most popular of them is the Anna Ross Non-Profit Foundation Race, this is the thirteenth edition of the race, and this year it’s scheduled to take place October 9^th with three available categories, a 2 km walk , 5 and 10 Kilometers run (1.24, 3 and 6 miles) starting from Paseo Colon at 8 a.m. , the cost of registration is of ten thousand colones (under $20.00 USD) for the 3 and 6 miles race, the 2 mile walk has no cost.  Victoria Ross, president of this foundation, stated:  “The event works as a means to educate the general population about cancer, when we started no one wanted to even hear the word “cancer” mentioned, the race has worked as a tool for social change, our organization doesn’t focus only on breast cancer, but in all forms of cancer, we still have a long way to go when it comes to generating a change of mentality about prostate cancer for example”.

Cruzada Avon will take place October 16^th with three  categories, a 4km walk (2.5 miles) and two running categories of 5 and 10 km  (3 and 6 miles), it starts off from Purdy Motor, Paseo Colón at 7:30 a.m. and has a cost of 12 thousand colones ($24 USD)

The last event of this type Las Mujeres Corremos is organized by McDonald’s, the date is set for October 23rd,   it’s a 5 kilometer (3 miles) race leaving from McDonald’s Pavas at 7 a.m. and finishing at McDonald’s Sabana, registering for the race has a cost of 11 thousand colones ($22 USD).

The registration cost for each event includes the T-Shirt of the event, a disposable chip, hydration, medal, number ID, a snack and insurance policy that will cover all participants during the race.
