A 35-year-old man by the last names Rojas Retana was arrested this past Tuesday by the Costa Rican police in Desamparados, San José, as he is the main suspect of raping a 9 year-old girl on several ocassions and having distributed the pornografic material through the dark web.

The Costa Rica police received an alert from Interpol stating that they had traced the origin of somo 300 videos of child pornography to that particular location. The chief of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Office of Judicial Investigations (OIJ), Guillermo Fonseca, stated they had confiscated computers, USB´s, cell phones, tablets and sexual toys. The main evidence, however, are the videos sent to different destinations including New Zealand, Australia and France.

Rojas Retana is accused of the crime of child sexual abuse, production and distribution of child pornography. At the time of his arrest the suspect didn´t have a criminal record, he was living with the victim and her family, (her parents and a 13 year-old brother), according to neighbors and information obtained by the police Rojas had been living in this house for close to 15 years as a friend of the child´s father.

Apparently the children´s parents work and the suspect stayed home, he picked her up from school and had a very close relation to her; the investigation suggest the man probably began abusing her back in 2014, year in which the first videos were distributed.

¨We will be interviewing both children, as well as the father and mother to detemine whether they have any responsability or if there was negligence on their part. We are also investigating further and interviewing the neighbors to determine if there are any other victims¨, explained Fonseca. Body fluids were found by the police on the girls clothes, toys and bed.

The videos were discovered in a child pornography site in New Zealand and traced back to Costa Rica through the computer´s IP address.

The suspect will have to spend a year in preventive prison, while he awaits trail.

Both children are now under the custody of the nation’s child welfare agency PANI
