Google transit is now including Costa Rica’s train stops, routes and schedules to make it easier to use this method of transportation.

This was made possible by the joint efforts of Google, Costa Rica’s Train Institute (INCOFER), and the company Bus.cr.

The tool Google Transit is part of the app Google Maps and it’s designed with the purpose of making information available to users that need to travel by train from one point to another. Costa Rica is the second Central American country to have this tool available, the first one was Panama.

“We currently provide transportation to sixteen thousand people in a daily basis, we know our users require to be informed about the routes and the stops of the train service; with the help of Google Transit now they can access this information in a simple manner”, stated Christian Vargas, executive president of INCOFER.

INCOFER trains already have the GPS system installed, and although this data is still not available in Google Transit it is something that is being worked on; having this feature will allow users to know if there are any delays and the exact time the train is expected to arrive.

In the future the App expects to provide similar information for bus transportation, but this is yet not available due to the fragmentation of buses in San José.

The app is available for use in both IOS and Android systems. All you have to do is establish your current location and your destination, select the train icon and this will give you all required information.
