This Sunday, June 11 at 5:42 a.m. the Rincón de la Vieja Volcano in Guanacaste, registered a new eruption, the column was not visible due to the cloudy conditions in the area at this hour.

Neighbors of the area were able to capture the vapor in the river product of a small lahar to the North of the volcano.The Penjamo river shows a grayish coloration and a strong sulfur-like odor.

The Rincón de la Vieja is one of Costa Rica’s active volcanoes, it has registered phreatic activity since 2011, and occasional eruptions; the last one was registered on May 23 and generated small lahars.

Video shared by the National University’s Volcanology and Seismology Research Institute and sent in by Joaquin Matarrita shows the lahar as it comes down the river.

Local emergency teams are in the area inspecting the region close to the volcano including the rivers.

When it comes to the Poás Volcano in Alajuela, specialists inspected the active crater and confirmed that the lake has disappeared, the crater now shows at least two geological structures called “tuff ring” . The volcano continues to show a column of gases and vapor with aerosols that sometimes show blue and yellowish colors because of the fine particles of sulfur, sulfate, silica, and drops of sulfuric acid that are now exposed to the atmosphere due to the disappearance of the acid lake.
