The International Surfing Association and the Portuguese Surfing Federation are the organizers of the Vissla ISA World Junior Surfing Championship that will take place in Azores Islands, Portugal from September 17 through the 25 and where Costa Rica’s Sub-18 National Surfing Team will be participating.

The Costa Rican athletes, 10 in total, arrived to Azores on Wednesday, September 14, as of today they will take their time to get familiar with the beach, its temperature and its waves. The inaugural event is scheduled for Saturday, September 17 at 8 a.m.

Leilani McGonagle and Emily Gussoni recently took part of the Azores Airlines Pro Women’s Qualifying Series which also took place in Azores; McGonagle made it to quarterfinals while Gussoni finished in the 25th position among 48 competitors.

After the International Olympic Committee recently voted to include Surfing at the Summer Olympics of the Tokyo 2020 Games, the Vissla ISA World Junior Surfing Championship will showcase some of the talent that will likely represent their nations in 2020.
