In solidarity with the family of Gerardo Cruz Barquero, the mobile app and private transportation service Uber has announced that it will give free rides to type O Negative (Rh O-) blood donors to the Calderón Guardia Hospital, located in San Jose, on Saturday, October 10.

A press release by Uber, a business entity that still lacks legal approval to operate in Costa Rica, presents the hashtag #SalvaUnaVida (Save a Life) and explains:

Uber deeply regrets the tragedy suffered by Gerardo Cruz. To support the efforts of the staff at the Calderón Guardia Hospital, Uber members will get free rides if they are going to the blood bank at the hospital between the hours of 9:00 am and 2:00 pm.

If you are not yet a member of Uber, install the mobile app from the Apple App Store or Google Play; you need to confirm your email address, credit card number and telephone number so that you can get a free ride to the Calderón Guardia Hospital.

The free Uber rides are up to 15,000 colones (about $29).

Donors should be between the ages of 18 and 59, have ID, weigh more than 50 kilograms, not have donated in the last three months, and not have gotten recent tattoos or piercings (within the last year).

A 22-year old man who confronted another man for filming an “upskirt” video in the capital city of Costa Rica was stabbed multiple times last night as he walked through the San Sebastian district, located in the southern suburbs of San Jose.

The victim, who has been identified by the last names of Cruz Barquero, recently became a social media sensation after an incident that took place in the Avenida Central (Central Avenue) pedestrian boulevard that bisects downtown San Jose, the most transited spot in Costa Rica. On October 5th, Mr. Cruz was walking down the boulevard when he noticed a man filming a young woman from behind. The woman was wearing a loose miniskirt that was flying up every time the wind picked up, and the man behind her tried to capture the moment on his smartphone.

Mr. Cruz has undergone three surgeries at the hospital, and thus may require a few more pints of blood. He is currently in intensive care.
