The crude photograph of an adult jaguar lying dead on a pool of his own blood has caused indignation on social media circles in Costa Rica. The picture was posted on Facebook, allegedly by a young man who participated in the killing of the wild cat in Barra del Colorado, in the Caribbean province of Limon.

Karla Baquero of online news daily CRHoy.com has been compiling comments that illustrate the social media reaction to the grisly photo and the alleged motives behind the killing. Aside from indignation, some veiled threats against the alleged perpetrator were already being made:

What is the extent of human stupidity? First you kill an animal in this fashion and then you boast about it in this fashion. This is a repugnant “man.” I hope “certain people” will find him.

How can there be such imbeciles? This is a protected species, and on top of it all the hunters relish this abominable act. We need a strict law to deal with people who commit such atrocities.

Last year, Costa Rica became the first country to issue a legal ban on hunting for sport. The Costa Rica Star has already reported on some actions taken to enforce the law, including a scary armed standoff between hunters and police officers in Guanacaste. CRHoy.com explains that the Ministry of the Environment is aware of the killing of the jaguar and that Wildlife Management agents from the National System of Conservation Areas are investigating.

The Facebook user who posted the dead jaguar photo in his timeline has been responding to some of the accusatory comments left by others. He claims that the motive for the killing was that the feline was feasting on livestock. Photos of the young man on his profile show him holding weapons and dressed in hunting garb.
