If you want some extra income, and have a 4-door car no older than a year 2000 model, you can register at Nova to be a driver. The company is seeking applicants throughout Costa Rica’s seven provinces.

The driver phone/computer application will be released May 24, and the company says they plan to start offering services, complete with a legal services department for drivers, July 24, according to information on their Facebook page.

 

The service will use a location-based app, similar to the way Uber works, for people to readily hire an on-demand private driver. Customers can download the app as of July 24, after which time the service will be available.

Concerns linger due to conflicts that have arisen over the past more than a year of Uber operating in the country, especially among potential drivers, several of whom inquired as to whether Nova was “legal,” to which the company replied:

“In the Costa Rican legal framework the activity is not explicitly prohibited, so, based on legal principles, this transportation is allowed. There is a legal vacuum in the Costa Rican laws that is causing these problematic situations. That is why we will have available to our drivers a specialized legal department, if they wish to use it, to deal with any type of problem.”

Users may soon have another, possibly even less expensive option than Uber for getting around.

Nova explains that registered drivers pay a $35 monthly fee to use the company’s application; all the money they make from driving is then 100 percent their own.
