One of the joys of purchasing property in Costa Rica is the potential for landowners to plant and care for trees that will bear fruit. Listings in the province of Guanacaste tend to feature greater lot sizes, and thus they offer more opportunities for keeping fruit trees in the property. In the fertile land of Guanacaste, landowners have been planting both native and exotic trees for centuries, and the most popular species tend to be those that bear delicious fruitsin addition to providing shade and supporting the ecosystem of birds and other wildlife.

One of the most popular tree species among landowners in Guanacaste is Annona cherimola, which is native to the Andean regions of Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. In Costa Rica, trees from the Anonaceae family grow to a height of about eight meters and provide reasonable shade. This tree enjoys healthy growth in mountainous regions, but it can also be found growing across farms and close to the savannahs. The Inca people call the tasty fruit of this tree Chirimuya; its flowers are very aromatic, and the heart-shaped fruit features a creamy-white pulp that is edible, sweet and perfect for juice concentrate and to mix with rum-based tropical cocktails.

There’s also Persea americana, which bears the popular aguacate (avocado) fruit. The Lauraceae family in Costa Rica grows in abundance, but fruit from the species grown here tends to be smaller and shaped a bit differently than in Mexico or Florida. Avocado trees can be grown from a single seed, which makes them ideal for patient homeowners who plan to retire in our country.
