Times have certainly changed, years back, even maybe 20 years ago Holy Week in Costa Rica meant no cars at all in the streets and very few services operating; today the traditions have changed to some extent, many businesses operate as usual, and others instead of closing the entire week just observe the mandatory holidays (Thursday and Friday).

The majority of the public institutions in Costa Rica will remain closed the entire Holy Week, but because of the second round elections coming up on Easter Sunday, the Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) will remain open even Thursday and Friday for anyone who needs to request or pick up a replacement of their ID to be able to vote April 1st.

Hospitals and health centers will work on a normal schedule through Wednesday but Thursday and Friday only emergency services will be operating.

The Costa Rica Banks Association has confirmed banks will be operating normally Monday and Tuesday, while Wednesday the majority of the banks will also work normal hours except for Banco General and Prival Bank that will work through 3 p.m. , DaVivienda will open their different branches until 3 p.m. except those located in shopping centers which will close at 6 p.m. ; Cathay Bank will also close at 3 p.m. except for mini agencies and the Multiplaza Escazu branch that will work normal hours.

Thursday through Sunday the majority of the banks will remain closed, BAC Credomatic makes the exception for its agency at the Juan Santamaria Airport that will work normally. The mini agencies of Cathay Bank will open regular hours on Thursday, Friday they are closed, and Saturday and Sunday they’ll open until 3 p.m. DaVivienda will be closed Thursday and Friday and on Saturday and Sunday the agencies at shopping centers will have normal schedule.
