While playing a match against Jeremy Hardy of France at the Montreal ATP World Tour Masters 1000, professional tennis star Novak Djokovic, currently the highest rated player in the world, discovered a sort of Achilles’ Heel. According to a report published by Sports24 of South Africa, Mr. Djokovic complained of a pungent smell of marijuana coming from the seats surrounding the tennis court.

Mr. Djokovic complained to the match officials after coming out victorious against Mr. Hardy and advancing in the ATP World Tour without a single defeat thus far. It turns out that this is not the first time Mr. Djokovic has smelled ganja in the air during the tournament; he also noticed the smell, which appears to be coming from the lower seats, as he was playing a doubles match the day before.

Mr. Djokovic told reporters that he could not believe just how strong the smell was; he added that he did not enjoy it and was hoping that the same pot smoking fan would not back to watch him play this weekend. He added that he could smell marijuana buring through a few sets, and that he could not believe a single fan could be smoking that much at once. The Serbian tennis star joked: “I think [the smoking fan] was somewhere in seventh heaven [by the end of the match].”

Although it is not clear whether Mr. Djokovic is a marijuana smoker himself, he jokingly commented that he felt that he was playing better as the doubles match progressed. Nonetheless, the smell distracted him enough to complaint to match officials after his match against Mr. Hardy the next day; at one point he felt disoriented.

As previously reported by The Costa Rica Star, Mr. Djokovic’s current number one rating was recently cemented in Wimbledon:

“It’s a great privilege to play against Roger, who is a great champion,” Djokovic said. “He has done so much for our sport on and off the court. It’s a great honor to play him again.”

The 28-year-old Djokovic, who also won titles at the All England Club last year and in 2011, is now 9-8 in major finals.
