The spike in searches on moving to Canada as U.S. election results come in, Search Engine Land.
As it became clear over the course of election night in the U.S. that Donald Trump was on track to becoming the 45th U.S. President, searches related to moving to Canada spiked. These included a variety of search queries like “I want to move to Canada” and “Move to Canada.”
The majority of these types of queries were coming from blue states that had gone for Clinton, such as Vermont, Oregon, Minnesota, and Rhode Island, though there were some red states represented on the list as well.
Other queries that Google was seeing from some of these same people included “how to impeach a president,” “how did Trump win,” and “how to move to Sweden.”
The Canadian immigration website went down, overwhelmed by traffic from despondent Americans seeking to learn more about moving north. The site is now back up if you’d like to learn more. — By Greg Sterling, Search Engine Land
