Starting this Saturday, June 3, urban passenger train service will be available Saturdays between Cartago and San José, announced the Costa Rican Railways Institute (INCOFER) this week.

Saturdays, trains depart starting at 6:30 a.m from the Atlantic station in downtown San José and from the Cartago station, and from then on every hour on the half hour until 1:30 p.m.

Tickets are ¢550 – less than a dollar – one way. This is the same as weekday fares.

INCOFER spokeswoman, María Fernanda Arias, said that the new service complements Saturday service between San José, Heredia and Alajuela.

“When users saw the opening of trips on Saturdays in Alajuela, they expressed the need for such a service from Cartago, because there are many university students who must travel to San José and people who work until noon, so we evaluated that and responded to that request,” said Arias at a press conference.

The weekday schedule on the San José – Cartago route includes additional peak hour trips between 5:15 and 8.30 a.m. and between 3:10 and 7:30 p.m.
