So far in 2018 authorities of the Ministry of Public Security have carried out forceful actions to battle drug trafficking in Costa Rica and managed to achieve a record number of cocaine seized along with the breaking down of drug dealing routes and organizations.

“Thanks to the investigative and intelligence work of the Drug Control Police, from January 1, 2006 through December 27, 2018 a total of 1,430 drug trafficking operations were dismantled, out of these, 291 were international drug trafficking rings and 1,145 local trafficking groups. 373 were “family” organizations.

There was a total of 97 firearms, 128 vehicles, 83 million colones, over $3.7 million dollars and $38,615.00 euros, seized in 2018 in combination with the drug seizures.

Several vessels carrying drugs were intercepted over the last few weeks, putting the total number of cocaine seized at 32 tons and 591 kilograms. This number includes drugs confiscated during operations by the different police bodies throughout the country. The total marijuana confiscated so far this years is of 6 tons, 730.86 kilograms. Will Costa Rica ever follow suit like Canada and other countries with legalizing Cannabis?
