The Costa Rican government has approved the project “Fortuna en Dos Ruedas” (Fortune in Two Wheels), which proposes the creation of a 60 kilometer bike lane in the tourist area of La Fortuna de San Carlos.

With an investment of close to U.S. $20 million, the bike lane will be developed in five stages and will take cyclists through some of the most important tourist sites in this area, the center of La Fortuna, the Waterfall of La Fortuna River, Cerro Chanto, Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal.

The Ministry of Public Works and Transportation, the National Roadway Council (CONAVI- Consejo Nacional de Vialidad) and the San Carlos Municipality together with private institutions are joining efforts to make this a reality.

“The signing of this agreement shapes this public-private initiative that wants to give the population of San Carlos road infrastructure that will promote new forms of transportation, offers cyclists road safety and increase the use of this form of transportation not just with tourism purposes for those who visit the area but also for the residents of the area”, commented German Valverde, Minister of Public Works and Transportation.

“This project will give La Fortuna a different face, having a bike lane will allow that many Europeans that visit this area can enjoy riding their bike and in this way caring for the environment. It is a project that will make a difference”, expressed Alfredo Cordoba, major of San Carlos.

Currently the different institutions are working on the planning of the development of the project and will define the term for the execution of the same.
