Michael Baker has been creating sculptures for more than two decades. His artwork has been exhibited all over the United States, and in 2012 he made his international debut in Costa Rica. If you are a fan of the Iron Man film series, there is a good chance that you are already familiar with Mr. Baker’s work, and now you can see more of it in Guanacaste.

According to Mr. Baker, a film production company behind the blockbuster hit Iron Man 3 got in touch with him to inquire about a contemporary sculpture that would look good as part of Tony Stark’s considerable art collection:

Table top sculpture “Journey #1” was selected and purchased for the set of the current blockbuster movie starring among others, Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Because Iron Man movies are typically action-packed, I wasn’t sure what the fate of the sculpture might be. I knew there was a very good chance it might not survive the entire movie, but who knows, it may return in Iron Man 4… it is Hollywood after all.

Journey #1 is certainly gorgeous, but Mr. Baker can show you many other pieces currently on exhibit in Guanacaste. In early 2014, he installed eight sculptures at The Four Seasons Resort at Peninsula Papagayo, which we can imagine Tony Stark would enjoy staying in should he visit Costa Rica. On February 1^st, he opened an exhibit at the Hidden Garden Art Gallery in Liberia.

Mr. Baker describes his work as:

inspired by architecture and the forms that are found within architectural structures. Whether incorporating circular, triangular, rectangular or square shapes and forms, it has been my objective to arrange these forms into a three dimensional sculpture that I feel is organized and interesting.

On his move to San Antonio de Escazu, Mr. Baker explains:

I recently began a new body of work in Costa Rica, one that I have been exploring for quite some time.

I wanted to minimize the individual elements in my past sculptures, then arrange these elements in a slightly different way. As new work develops, I am seeing two separate styles evolve.

My focus in Costa Rica is in two areas. The first is to explore exhibition possibilities that would allow me to introduce my work to the local art community. My second focus is to show my work to residential clients, architects, landscape architects and art consultants who influence selections in both residential and commercial spaces.
