Shortly after law enforcement agents in Sweden conducted a spectacular raid on a data center located just outside of Stockholm, the legendary and notorious file-sharing site The Pirate Bay appeared to have sailed to Costa Rica, landing at the thepiratebay.cr. As reported by The Costa Rica Star just a few days before Christmas, the legitimacy of The Pirate Bay hosted in Costa Rica was dubious at best.

Anyone familiar with the rocky history of The Pirate Bay will certainly know that this is an extremely resilient organization, and thus it is not surprising to see the news reported by Swedish online news daily The Local:

The site came back online on Saturday with a new ‘Phoenix’ logo, a day ahead of a start date indicated by a countdown timer on a temporary site uploaded after servers were seized. The last survivor of the file-sharing sites launched in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Pirate Bay has now been somewhat superseded by streaming services such as Spotify and Netflix.

Like the legend of the Phoenix, The Pirate Bay has risen from the ashes to return to its virtual home in Sweden; this much can be noted by the domain name thepiratebay.se. However, The Pirate Bay can be hosted and served from just about anywhere. The Christian Science Monitor explains:

Though [The Pirate Bay] has a .se domain name (technically registered in Sweden) the website has been notoriously nationless, as it runs on cloud-based servers located in different countries, while several countries battled for it to be banned. At its peak, it had over 50 million users worldwide.

There is no telling what the future may hold for The Pirate Bay in Costa Rica or Sweden, but it is interesting to note that an analysis of the torrent activity on the site during its first 48 hours indicates that music files are being downloaded at an extremely low rate. The Christian Science Monitor hints at the popularity of streaming apps such as Spotify and Pandora as the reason for the reduced sharing of music on the new, “Phoenix” version of The Pirate Bay.
