Spanish customs agents at the Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas International Airport detained a man who had flown in from Costa Rica carrying 400 grams of cocaine hydrochloride in powdered form. The incident, which took place last Friday, made headlines in Europe due to the ill-chosen smuggling method.

According to a news report filed by Fran Hurtado of online Spanish news daily La Información, customs agents decided to inspect the air traveler from Costa Rica due to the unusually large bulge between his legs.

At first sight, the customs agents believed that the man was very well-endowed and perhaps excited to land in a beautiful destination such as Spain. Upon closer inspection, however, agents noticed a piece of plastic sticking out from the man’s pants.

It so happened that the man had packed the cocaine in a cylindrical bundle that he could not keep in his pants. The traveler attempted to strap the cocaine to his genitals by means of using two sets of underpants: one solid black pair and the other in a striking floral design.

The Madrid-Barajas International Airport is a major travel hub between Costa Rica and Europe. Non-stop, transatlantic flights are provided by the respected Spanish airline Iberia on a daily basis from the Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO), located in the Alajuela province.

In Spain, the National Police is not in the habit of revealing too much information about suspects taken into custody, and thus the nationality of the man was not revealed; however, prosecutors explained that they intend to charge the man with a crime against public health, an offense that could result in a prison sentence of about six months to three years.
