Guatemala City, Apr 7 (EFE).– Visitors to a zoo in Guatemala will now be able to see Casa Sostenible, the first sustainable house built in Central America, a project that features renewable technologies.

“With Casa Sostenible, we are trying to provide sustainable alternatives to the 1.2 million visitors who are welcomed each year by La Aurora Zoo,” the attraction’s education director, Valerie Syrowicz, said.

The house is equipped with solar panels, a system for collecting rainwater for household use and a water recycling system for use in the garden.

The dwelling’s walls were constructed with “ecobricks” and it is outfitted with a bicycle-powered pump to get water out of the tanks.

The house cost 150,000 quetzales ($19,451) to build and the goal is to teach the public about environmental sustainability. EFE
