Club Sport Herediano (CSH), a professional football club in the First Division of Costa Rica, obtained its 25th championship in its history, which dates back nearly 100 years.

The final match of the summer tournament took place at the Eladio Rosabal Cordero Stadium in the city of Heredia. CSH routed Liga Deportiva Alajuelense (LDA) by 3 – 0 on Saturday night.

CSH received the championship trophy from the National Football Union (Spanish acronym: UNAFUT) in a conference room at the stadium instead of celebrating with fans on the pitch. UNAFUT had already determined that the trophy ceremony would be conducted indoors if fans insisted on taking the pitch; after this quick formality, the players joined the fans and celebrated until the early morning hours.

For David Patey, an expat businessman from the United States, this championship is a strong validation of his dedication to make sure that CSH remains financially sound for the sake of players, coaching staff, and -more importantly, fans.

As previously explained by The Costa Rica Star, Mr. Patey presides the business entity that holds CSH, an association in which he is the majority shareholder along with three other expats, two from the U.S. and one from Canada.

When Patey became interested in CSH back in 2012, the club was strong from a tactical point of view, but its future was uncertain from a business point of view. Through his business dealings, Patey came to hold shares in the entity that owned the club.

These days, CSH enjoys one of the most loyal fan followings in Costa Rica’s First Division. The club has received accolades for making its Eladio Rosabal Cordero stadium a venue that is both affordable and comfortable for families.

In two years, Mr. Patey will be able to celebrate the 100th anniversary of CSH as a football association, but he will have to wait until 2021 to celebrate the official registration in the First Division. CSH fans will surely hope that Mr. Patey hold on to the club until then.
