United States President Barack Obama addressed his nation on Sunday afternoon in the wake of a horrific shooting being investigated as an of terrorism.

As of mid-day on Sunday, reports indicated that at least 50 people were killed by a man identified as Omar Mateen, a U.S. citizen of Afghan ethnicity, who burst into a nightclub that caters to gay revelers before shooting into the dance floor with an assault rifle and a handgun.

The shooter was killed by a special weapons and tactics (SWAT) team in the early morning hours of Sunday after he had terrorized the revelers at the Pulse nightclub, located in the City of Orlando, home to Disney World and to the world’s most popular amusement parks. Law enforcement officials declared a state of emergency.

Local television news broadcasters in Orlando reported that the shooter may have pledged allegiance to ISIS in a phone call to emergency services before the shooting.

The Presidential address was brief and to the point. He expressed condolences and offered prayers to the families of the victims. President Obama reiterated the message he previously stated in the aftermath of the San Bernardino terror attack last year, that the U.S. must stand together and not succumb to fear:

We know enough to say this was an act of terror and an act of hate […] We have to decide if that’s the kind of country we want to be.

President Obama ordered the U.S. flag to be lowered at half mast across the nation.

At the time this report was published, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Costa Rica had not yet issued a statement on this matter. The President of Panama, Juan Carlos Varela, expressed condolences.

Members of the LGBT community in Costa Rica took to social media to learn about the victims and whether they had any connection to our country. The Consulate General in Miami is expected to look into the matter as the situation unfolds.
