The Costa Rica National PRO Jiu-Jitsu Championship will take place September 17 at the BN Arena in Hatillo, San Jose. This is the second time that Costa Rica is chosen to host this event, which is part of the UAEJJF World Ranking and Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Qualifying Series. According to Paulo Wesson, Gracie Barra instructor and sub-affiliate in Costa Rica, this country is selected due to the great level of its athletes, the organization of the different academies, the country’s strategic geographic position and its political stability.

BJJ athletes from North America and Central America can register and take part in this great event and the winners will receive a complete travel package to Abu Dhabi to participate in the 2017 Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship in April. Last year’s winners were Sebastian Rodriguez, blue belt, (now competing as purple belt), and Oscar Pereira, back then purple belt, who won the World Championship in his division and will be competing again this year as a brown belt.

This event is open to all belts; last year the event only admitted Adults and Masters Divisions this year it includes Juveniles (16-17 years old), and all categories are open to male and female participants.

Juveniles include 8 weight divisions and only white and blue belts.
Adults and Masters: white, blue, purple, brown and black belts in 6 weight categories, except in the case of female Masters Competitions where brown and black compete together.

Last year’s event was a success in its first edition, with over 170 participating athletes that came to Costa Rica from Canada, U.S.A, Mexico, Panama and Central American countries, this year they expect at least 250 competitors.
