Marrakesh, Morocco, Nov. 15 — The Secretary-General of the United Nations said yesterday that he hopes the new president-elect of the United States will understand the severity and urgency of climate change.

Ban Ki-moon spoke at a press conference in Marrakech, Morocco, amid the ongoing COP22 talks, a meeting of almost 200 nations to implement the 2015 Paris Agreement limiting greenhouse gas emissions.

“I hope he will really hear and understand the severity and urgency of addressing climate change,” Ban said of his hopes that Donald Trump will comprehend what is at stake.

The Secretary-General added that many US companies, states and cities were already pushing to limit the impact of global warming.

“What was once unthinkable has become unstoppable,” he said, referring to last year’s agreement, which has been formally adopted by over 100 countries, including the US under the administration of President Barack Obama.

Referring to Trump, Ban expressed his hopes that the controversial incoming president of the US would change his view that anthropogenic climate change was a hoax orchestrated by China and retract his promise to pull out of the Paris Agreement.

“I am sure he will make a quick, wise decision,” Ban said, while warning about the “severe” impacts of climate change from the Artic to Antarctica. EFE
