Washington, Nov. 28 — Eleven people were hurt Monday on the campus of Ohio State University when a man deliberately drove his car into a crowd and then jumped out and attacked pedestrians with a butcher knife until he was fatally shot by a police officer.

OSU public safety director Monica Moll identified the attacker as Abdul Razak Ali Artan, a third-year student at the university.

Citing anonymous sources, U.S. media outlets said that Artan was a Somali-born legal permanent resident of the United States.

One of the 11 people injured in the attack is listed in critical condition at a hospital in Columbus, Ohio’s capital and home to OSU.

“To go over the curb and strike pedestrians and to get out and start striking them with a knife, that was on purpose,” campus Police Chief Craig Stone said of the assault, which started shortly before 10 am.

“Our officers were on the scene in less than a minute, and an officer ended the situation in less than a minute. He engaged the suspect and he eliminated the threat. The suspect is DOA,” the chief said.

The officer who shot Artan was 28-year-old Alan Horujko, a two-year veteran of the campus police force, Moll said.

Police sources told U.S. television networks that Artan left Somalia with his family in 2007 and spent time in Pakistan before coming to the U.S. in 2014.

Footage from security cameras confirmed Artan acted alone on Monday.

“We can prove to you that the suspect was by himself in the vehicle and committed this act by himself today,” Stone said. “It’s an ongoing investigation to determine motive and if anybody else was involved in this act.”

The Columbus police chief, Kim Jacobs, said that both local and federal authorities are investigating the possibility of terrorism.

OSU’s president, Michael Drake, urged people not to assume that the attack was terrorism based solely on Arkan’s Somali origin.

“We all know when things like this happen that there’s a tendency sometimes for people to put people together and create other kinds of theories. We don’t know anything that would link this to any community. We certainly don’t have any evidence that would say that’s the case,” Drake said.

In September, a young Somali-American man stabbed 10 people at a mall in Minnesota before an off-duty police officer fatally shot him.

The attacker in that case targeted non-Muslims, according to authorities, and the Islamic State subsequently claimed responsibility.

President Barack Obama was briefed on the situation in Ohio as it developed, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said.

“Watching the news unfold at Ohio State University,” President-elect Donald Trump said in a Facebook post. “Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the students and administration.”

He also hailed the “excellent job” done by the OSU police and administration in eliminating the threat and alerting people via social media.
