Out of Costa Rica’s seven provinces maybe Cartago is the one that tourists know less off, however, this province has a lot to offer.

Cartago was once the capital of Costa Rica, and home to some of the most influential families of the XVIII and XIX centuries. The temperature here is colder than the rest of the country, and the scenic views impressive.

Guayabo National Park and Monument: This is an archeological site located in the county of Turrialba, this is the oldest and most important pre-Hispanic archeological site in the country. Although there are different theories on when this area was founded and occupied, the majority of them consider that the occupation of the region took place between 1000 b.C. and 1400 a.C. The history of the National Park makes it unique and intriguing. The infrastructure of the place, the aqueduct system, tombs and petroglyphs are interesting to see especially considering the age they stem from. The place is also surrounded by rainforest, and of course the Turrialba Volcano sits in the background to complete a beautiful scene.

Irazú Volcano: If eco-tourism is your thing, the Irazú Volcano is an obligatory stop, take warm clothes as it gets very cold here, (it is the highest Volcano in Costa Rica), recently at night the temperatures drop to a point that the dew drops turn into fine ice, and it covers many areas of the park. The drive to get here is long, but it is enjoyable because of the impressive views. In a clear day you can see the crater. A wide variety of flora and fauna is found in this area. Many tourists combine the visit to the Volcano with other stops, since once at the National Park it only take about 30-40 minutes to complete your visit. A stop by the Ruins of the Church of Cartago and the Basílica de Los Angeles are great options.

Tapantí National Park: Located in Orosi, this Park is ideal for nature lovers. A variety of ecosystems and rich nature allow for a wide range of wildlife. Rivers, small waterfalls, and green everywhere. There are different trails you can choose from with different levels of difficulty.

Lankester Botanial Gardens: A good place to relax and step out of your routine surrounded by natural beauty. Enjoy learning about many different plants and flowers, the orchids certainly steal the show.
