According to MarViva Foundation 80% of the residues in our oceans are plastic, and 8 million tons of plastic end up in the oceans every year, a group of concerned Costa Rican’s take it upon themselves to make a difference and help the environment by collecting the plastic that washes ashore in the different beaches, one of these groups is the Nicoya Peninsula Waterkeeper, a non-government organization with the mission of “monitoring, protecting and restoring water quality in the coastal watersheds and marine ecosystems between the Cabo Blanco Absolute Nature Reserve and the Caletas-Ario Narional Wildlife Refuge through research, field work, education and advocacy”.
The Nicoya Peninsula Waterkeeper is part of the Waterkeeper Alliance, a global network of more than 200 organizations dedicated to cleaning up rivers, lakes and beaches; they have been doing this very important task in the pacific coast of Costa Rica since 2013. It was precisely while one of their recycling campaigns in Santa Teresa that the owner of BIONIC, who was vacationing in the area, became interested in their work.
BIONIC transforms fibers made from recycled plastic into durable textiles through the use of innovative technologies, the company has the ability to properly process plastic that has been recovered from the ocean and transform it into Bionic Yarn, a soft thread that can be adapted to create almost any type of clothing article.
The thread created with the plastic collected by Nicoya Peninsula Waterkeeper was then used by H&M to create their “Conscious Exclusive Collection”, the gown featured in the photo is part of this collection. “You can’t believe the Bionic dress is made from old plastic bottles,” Ann-Sofie Johansson, H&M Creative Advisor.
Their complete collection will be launched April 10 in their online store and 150 of their stores around the world.
Bionic also donated a truck to continue collecting plastics and recyclable materials from our shores.
Singer Pharrell Williams is the creative director of BIONIC and has been raising awareness about the importance of recycling and reusing:
