Rancho Humo has a private reserve of 2640 acres which have been subject to restoration; what used to be a cattle farm is now an example of wetland rescue, it also has a traditional Guanacaste estate ranch spread over 2,718 acres.

This area is known for the different species of migratory birds that are frequently seen, and the variety of wildlife that inhabits the numerous ecosystems found in the area: mangrove, dry tropical rainforest, pastures and wetlands.

Daily tours are offered by the hotel, exploring the Tempique river and the Palo Verde National Park, Isla de Pájaros (Birds Island), Rancho Humo Reserve, Rancho Humo Lookout and a one-of-a-kind cattle ranch experience, among other possibilities.

In this area, the Jabirú stork, the largest bird in Central America, can be easily spotted, along with egrets, herons, ibis, grebes, spoonbills, ducks and hawks, crocodiles and howler monkeys are also easily seen.
