The beginning of the rainy season will also bring the long-awaited opening of the completely overhauled main access bridge connecting San José with the international airport in Alajuela.
After some unexpected recent delays, transportation officials said they estimated the new 6-lane Alfredo Gónzalez Flores bridge over the Virilla River would be fully ready and open by the end of May.
Until then, there is the same schedule in effect of two lanes open in one direction and one open in the other direction each day with an alternating schedule as follows:
– Two lanes will be open every day from Alajuela-San José between 12 midnight and 12 noon, leaving one open in the opposite direction during those hours.
– Conversely, from noon to 12 midnight, two lanes will be open every day from San José-Alajuela, leaving one open from Alajuela-San José during those hours.
Minister of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT) Carlos Villalta said the delays are due to remaining work required such as evaluating the joists, adjusting the level of the truss, and testing the strength and durability of the concrete in the expansion joints.
The engineer in charge of the work, Andrés Muñoz, said work on the structure will continue on a round-the-clock basis to ensure a timely completion of the project.
