Another eruption by Poás Volcano was registered by the National University’s Volcanology and Seismology Research Institute (OVSICORI) at 8:10 this morning, it extended for 10 minutes, information on the altitude reached by the column of gas is still unknown due to the visibility conditions at the site right now.

The two blasts the Poás had yesterday, which reached 3 kilometers in altitude, have been the biggest since 1953-1955. Large size rocks (30 centimeters) were expelled by the volcano which even affected infrastructure at the National Park. The volcano continued to show activity all through the day yesterday, experts registered minor eruptions every 30-40 minutes. The seismic activity continues, although it has lowered in comparison to prior days.

According to the volcanologists, it is expected that the Poás Volcano continues to have short term eruptions.

Meanwhile, the Turrialba Volcano has remained relatively calm, emanating a column of gas of about 300 meters above the active crater with low frequency seismic activity.

The Poás Volcano National Park remains close and the nearby communities continue in green alert.

Authorities have shown their concern about groups of tourists known as “risk tourists” that have been trying to reach the National Park disregarding the danger this represents; reports state that these groups even pay local guides to take them through the areas of Bajos del Toro and Bosque del Niño to gain access to the Volcano. This situation has also happened at the Turrialba Volcano sector where visitors disregard the security warnings and try to make their way to the main crater.
