The “Beach Break” at Banana Beach in Santa Teresa de Cóbano, Puntarenas, provided the perfect waves for the competitors to showcase their skills and for the audience to witness a great show during the third date of the “Kölbi” National Surf Tournament, OTIS Cup, especially on Saturday.

2-meter-high waves (6 feet), allowed for a very close competition among the 161 participants that started out on Saturday in the nine different categories.

The finals were celebrated this Sunday and it was Jason Torres from Jacó, who claimed the first place of the OTIS Cup, in the male open category, beating locals Anthony Fillingim and Olman Morales, he also dethroned Jair Pérez who came into the competition holding the first place but lost in the semifinals. Jason got a score of 9.33 in his first wave and a 7.17 in his second wave for a total of 16.5.

“I am very happy, I had almost 20 days without surfing so I came to this competition without much expectations. In the final I knew if I was patient I could do a good performance, the strategy worked and now I am very motivated to continue training hard”, said Jason.

Zulay Martínez from Tamarindo took the female open against very tough competition. “I want to dedicate this win to my cousin Malakai and the people of Tamarindo who motivate me day after day, they tell me all the time I can win, and today I believed it and it happened”, said Zulay.

Oscar Urbina was the winner in the male Junior category while Emily Gussoni was the female winner in this same category.
