In the second day of competition in Biarrtiz, France at the ISA World Surfing Games, the female competitors of “La Sele de Surf”, Costa Rica National Surfing Team, had a sweet and sour outing.

Leilani McGonagle finished round 2 with a total score of 11.73 beating Minami Nonaka from Japan (9.74), Marion Philippe from Tahiti (7.37) and Russian Irina Kosokubina (4.27). In round 3 McGonagle dropped to the second position but still got through to quarterfinals with a score of 7.33, South African Bianca Buitendag took the first place in their heat with 11.24.

Emily Gussoni, on the other hand, with 11.34 points, also took the first position in her 2nd round heat defeating Brazilian Jaqueline Silva (10.24), Eveline Hooft from Neatherlands 7.97 and Argentinean Lucía Indurain, but in the third round she fell to the last position in the heat with a score of 7.14; Daniella Rosas from Peru took first place with 11.57, and Dominic Barona from Ecuador got in the second place with 9.1.

McGonagle moved to the quarterfinals of the competition and faced Ella Williams from New Zealand, Daniella Rosas from Peru and Valentina Resano from Nicaragua , Leilani got the best score with 11.16 points, followed by Ella Williams with 9.76. McGonagle qualified to the semifinals which are all scheduled for tomorrow and where she will be up against Japanese Nao Omura, Bianca Buitendag from South Africa and Teresa Bonvalot from Portugal.

“I’m really happy with the results and getting through this long day, this team is super supportive and amazing”, said Leilani.
