Jaco will be the scenario of the fifth date of the “Kölbi” Surfing Tournament, and for the first time ever the Surfing Federation will be implementing random doping tests to the participating athletes.

“It is a pleasure for the Federation to announce to the country that our surfing just like the rest of the Olympic disciplines will be seeking transparency and fair play through the use of doping tests”, said Randall Cháves, President of the Surfing Federation. “We consider this to be a contemporary, positive and a big motivation for the surfers who prepare for the Olympic cycle and they expect a fair competition”, he added.

This Sunday four tests will be applied randomly.

The first participation of Costa Rica in the route to Tokyo Olympics 2020 will be December in the Central American Games in Managua, Nicaragua; this will be followed by the Panamerican Games in Lima, Perú in 2019.

The fifth date of the “Kölbi” Surfing Tournament denominated “INS Youth Cup 2017”, is the last opportunity for athletes to position themselves among the favorites to win the national title just a month later. This event, sponsored by the National Insurance Institute (INS) will give away $2,200.00 in cash prizes, the distribution of the prize has not yet been disclosed.

So far the strongest male contestants are Jason Torres, Jair Pérez, Anthony Fillingim and Leonardo Calvo; while in the female category Zulay Martinez, Coral Wiggins and Valentina Resano are accumulating the most points, while Emily Gussoni and Leilani McGonagle have not confirmed their participation in the fifth date.

The event will begin Saturday, June 24 at 7 a.m. and will close Sunday at 4 p.m. and will be held in fron of the Beach Break hotel (formerly Morgans Cove).
