Diplomatic delegations from several embassies in Costa Rica have confirmed their participation in today’s LGBTI Diversity March which has as a slogan “Human Rights for Everyone”.

The confirmed embassies include: USA, Bolivia, Canada, Colombia, Chile, France, UK, Netherlands, Israel, Mexico, Spain and EU as well as the UN System and its agencies.

This is the eight edition of the Diversity March in Costa Rica an event through which members of the LGBTI community seek to raise awareness about the need to promote tolerance, acceptance and respect in society and they raise their voice against discrimination and for equal rights.

In a press release, Andrea Vásquez, Public Relations official for the Canada Embassy in Costa Rica expressed that their participation in this activity allows them to inform about the measures that have been taken locally to warranty the enjoyment of human rights of all the inhabitants as well as support the actions that the UN has been promoting regarding the rights of the LGBTI community.

“The LGBTI people have the same human rights as everyone else, among them the right to equality and to the no discrimination. This principle is established in many international and regional instruments, as well as in the Resolutions of the Human Rights Council of the UN”, states the press release of the UN representation in Costa Rica.

The Front for Equal Rights in Costa Rica, explained that today’s march has four main topics: equal marriage (the right to legal marriage and the recognition as a family with the same rights as heterosexual couples); secular country (Costa Rica is a catholic state); anti-discrimination law and the recognition of gender identity (the right to use the name chosen and change the registered gender according to the individual’s identity).
