The London-based company, OpenSignal, which studies coverage and performance of the wireless industry throughout the world, has published its most recent State of Mobile Networks Report for Costa Rica.
The company analyzed 32,689,810 datapoints collected from 2,688 users during the period July 31 – October 30, 2016, according to the information on their website.
The main deficiency among all three providers is speed, found the report, with 4G services lagging.
Of the three main providers analyzed, Telefónica’s Movistar came in first on performance, with Grupo ICE’s Kölbi second, and América Móvil’s Claro third.
Movistar outshone the other to in 4G availability, whereas all three had adequate 3G coverage. OpenSignal said that “Movistar’s 3G/4G availability was as high as 97.3 percent in our tests.”
For 4G the company said they detected “an LTE signal on Movistar 76.9 percent of the time, but for Kölbi, only found LTE connections 43.7 percent of the time.”
Compared with other parts of the world where OpenSignal said download speeds can go beyond 30 Mbps, “the highest average 4G connection we measured in Costa Rica was 6.1 Mbps, again on Movistar’s network,” showing seriously lags in Internet speed.
The report also said, “Costa Rican operators have been hampered by the limited amount of spectrum they have to devote to 4G services,” but commended the country’s 3G infrastructure and availability of that service.
The country, said OpenSignal, has a chance to improve with a spectrum auction on the horizon which “should allow speeds to increase considerably.”
