The Costa Rican Tennis Federation is inviting tennis players to the tournament “Match Point por la Vida” or Match Point for Life, an event that will raise funds for children who are battling cancer.

The tournament is scheduled to take place on August 19, 20, (qualification matches) and 26, 27 (semifinals and finals) at the Los Reyes Country Club and the open categories are: doubles, male and female, A (Advanced), B (Average) and C (Beginner).

The registration is open until August 12, it has a cost of 22 thousand colones, approximately $40.00, and includes new tennis balls, hydration, referees, fruit and trophies.

“I had always wondered how I could help and contribute with the children that are battling cancer, and I had the idea of organizing a tournament and donating the proceedings to this cause. Los Reyes has first level infrastructure and the idea was supported by everyone”, said Ruddy Lindo, tennis director at the Tennis Academy of Los Reyes Country Club.

A silent auction of products donated by the sponsors will take place to raise more funds.

According to information provided by the Association Against Childhood Cancer , in Costa Rica three children are diagnosed with cancer every week, fortunately, 70% of those patients are able to recover. The funds obtained from this activity will be used for the shelter where they provide free care, food and a place to stay to children that are undergoing cancer treatment and are from rural areas or don’t have the necessary conditions to stay at their house.

“The idea is that people contribute and even private companies that can help with sponsorship or products that we can auction. We hope that it is a success and we can organize it again next year and that it becomes a tradition for the benefit of the children”, concluded Lindo.
