Diners at McDonalds along the main drag in San Rafael de Escazú, an upscale district west of San José, were in for more than they bargained for when they went out for a bite last night.

At around 9:40 p.m., two armed men entered the locale and robbed all customers and cash registers at gun point, reported police.

No one was physically harmed in the hold up, but customers and workers were left very shaken by the robbery.

One of the assailants was nabbed quickly by police outside the establishment as he tried to escape. Police reported that people’s belongings – consisting of several handbags and seven cell phones – were recovered. The man, 27-year-old Costa Rican, Ricardo Zúñiga Ramos, is a resident of Los Sitios de La Trinidad de Moravia.

His capture was made by police on patrol in the area; a search is on for Zúñiga’s accomplice, said the Ministry of Public Security.

Reports in the local digital media MundoEscazu.com said there were three assailants involved with the hold up, and said the robbery lasted all of five minutes.

The restaurant closed at 10 p.m.; no information about how much was stolen from McDonalds’ cash registers is currently available.
