For all those that are constantly seeking new adventures and enjoy discovering places in Costa Rica which tourists hardly ever hear of and locals many times don’t take their time to visit, a trip to the “Laguna de Hule” (Rubber Lake) is obligatory.

The Laguna de Hule is part of the Bosque Alegre Wildlife Refuge, created in 1994 with the objective of protecting what once was a volcanic crater now divided in three lakes and surrounded by forest. The area is home to different species of flora and fauna and it protects the water sources for the area of Río Cuarto in Alajuela.

The three lakes are, Hule, Congo and Bosque Alegre. Rubber Lake can be found at 400 meters above sea level and has an area of 40 Ha. and is approximately 75 meters deep which makes it the deepest natural lake in Costa Rica.

The drive here is of close to one and a half hours, take the road to the Poás Volcano, go through Vara Blanca, Cinchona and Cariblanco and then take the road to Los Angeles, the road is in acceptable conditions. There’s a parking lot at the View Point of Bosque Alegre, and then there’s a short walk (about 500 meters) through a trail surrounded by lush nature that will take you straight to Rubber Lake.

This Lake is perfect for a energizing swim , the water is surprisingly warm.

If you want to visit Lake Congo, it will just take another short walk through a different trail, the water here is of a surprising and beautiful green color.
