As The Costa Rica Star informed yesterday approximately 155000 neighbors of Santa Ana, Escazu, Desamparados and Alajuelita had their water service interrupted today because of maintenance work being done in the Stations of Puente Mulas 1 and 2, it was precisely during this maintenance work that a 54-year-old woman named Norma Lucia Roldan, wife to the sub-manager of the Costa Rican Institute of Aqueducts and Sewers (AYA) Andres Saenz, fell into the main pipe and passed away.

The information was confirmed by AyA, the Red Cross, the Judiciary Investigative Office and the Firefighters. The accident occurred at around 11:17 a.m. when for reasons still under investigation the woman was in a “risk area”, where she never should have been.

The woman fell into a 24 inch pipe, she was sucked in it and fell into the Virilla River, where the rescue teams found her already dead.

“The woman was introduced at the entrance as the wife of the sub manager of Investigation and Development, that’s the information that appears in the book record. She was supposed to be visiting and in a safe area, which is why we are investigating why she was in the high risk area”, explained Rodolfo Lizano, legal director of AyA .

“The process of maintenance is also used to do investigation work regarding the production process of the plant… him (Andres Saenz), was participating in this investigation, which is routine”, said Lizano.

According to the legal director two investigations are being carried out, an administrative one by the AyA and the legal process which is being carried out by the Heredia district attorney office.
