The company Opol Consultores S.A. was ready to release the results of their last survey prior to the Presidential Elections in Costa Rica that take place this Sunday, April 1st; however, after their team received threats they opted for cancelling the publication of the results.
“We regret not being able to conclude our work. The integrity of our collaborators comes first. It is important to say that the work done reflected a minimum variation in comparison to the survey published last Friday where the candidate of the National Restoration Party, Fabricio Alvarado, had a 56% in the vote intention versus a 44% of Carlos Alvarado of the Citizens’ Action Party”, stated the press release.
The threats received by the collaborators of Opol Consultores came after the activities that closed the presidential campaign, when images of a car supposedly related to the company with flags of the National Restoration Party were shared on Facebook. (images available)
According to Opol Consultores, the car belonged to a different company, Opinion Política C y C and the photos were shared by followers of the Citizens’ Action Party who have already been identified. Opol Consultores does have a direct relation with Opinion Política C y C as they confirm themselves, “It is of public knowledge and it is evident in our contracts. Both companies have been hired by at least 7 political parties in the past 2 years”, “All our employees have the free right to express publicly and openly their political preference if they have one, and there are no limitations to this”.
“The information was distorted with the clear intention of affecting Opol Consultores and the poll we were finishing those days with the idea of releasing it on Wednesday night. The violence and the number of threats received through electronic media against our team led us to take the decision of stopping the process”, explained the press release.
