Six people have died so far this Holy Week in Costa Rica as a result of water accidents in the different vacation hot spots in the country, five more have been rescued and required medical attention, while the Coast Guard Service has been patrolling the beaches that have prevented many more tragedies.

The last reported death was of a North American tourist in the area of Playa Hermosa de Jacó, Garabito, Puntarenas, the woman was rescued at 9:39 a.m. this Saturday, she suffered a heart attack and despite the assistance received she did not survive.

Just this past Friday, the Coast Guard Service rescued 10 tourists in waters of the Pacific, one of the incidents took place a mile and a half from the coast in Pavones, Golfito, where four tourists were dragged by the current, the rescue team acted fast and with the help of flotation devices brought them to safety; apparently one of the tourists was initially in danger and the others tried to help him with their surfboards but instead put themselves in a risky situation as well.

Six tourists were also rescued in the area of Manuel Antonio, while they also had to alert and raise awareness among the visitors.

Authorities have also been patrolling the most popular tourist destinations by ground and air to help prevent accidents as well as criminality.
