Costa Rica’s President elect Carlos Alvarado will name a commissionaire that will be in charge of promoting the LGBTI agenda during the four year presidential term.

The president will choose the commissionaire between the candidates proposed by organizations that defend the rights of the LGBTI population.

The commissionaire will serve as a link with the Legislative Assembly in the discussion of projects that affect this community, and will coordinate within the government the public policies in favor of inclusion and against discrimination.

“When a government chooses to advance in the topic of human rights, it has to create the state institutions necessary to create the public policies and take the decisions that favor a historically excluded population. The commissionaire will work as a link with the government and the people and will also have a relevant role in Congress in terms of discussing the agenda related to human rights and the LGBTI community”, commented Enrique Sanchez, congressman of the Citizens’ Action Party and an active member of the LGBTI community.

Organizations that defend the rights of the LGBTI population celebrated Alvarado’s commitment to the human right agenda, and consider that it is necessary to have someone in the government that promotes topics that directly affect them.
