Today, June 5, we celebrate the World Environmental Day, a day meant to encourage worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment.
Costa Rica celebrated with the signing of a decree by President Carlos Alvarado and the Minister of Environment, Carlos Manuel Rodriguez, for the expansion of the Rincon de la Vieja National Park, with the purpose of strengthening the protected area and the resources of the Guanacaste Conservation Area, declared by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) as a Natural Heritage site.
The decree aims to contribute with consolidation of the ecosystems and biological systems of the Guanacaste Conservation Area, securing the migration of different species and the mitigation of the climate change effects, in addition to protecting drainage basins.
Rincon de la Vieja National Park added 1,882 hectares, going from an area of 14,300 hectares to 16,182 hectares. The extension rectifies the limits of the park incorporating four areas that had the category of Natural Heritage of the State, which are adjacent to the park.
Located in Guanacaste, and with the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano as its main attraction, this area was declared a National Park in May 1974. It is divided for administrative purposes in three areas, Aguacatales sector, Las Pailas and Santa Maria, these last two attract many tourists every year.
The mountains of the Rincon de la Vieja protect important drainage basins, the sources of 32 rivers, among them the Penjamo, Azul, Cucurucho, Colorado, Blanco, Liberia, Salto and Ahogados.
