Shields got the win with scores of 98-91, 97-92, 97-92 and earned, her second World Title in a very short time as a professional. The native of Michigan holds the World Boxing Council (WBC) and International Boxing Federation (IBF) World Female Super Middleweight Champion (168 lbs.) and today won the IBF and WBA Female Middleweight World Titles (160 lbs).
It was not an easy fight for Shields, Gabriels knocked her down in the first round for the first time in her career; the former Olympian was able to pull herself back together and controlled the rest of the fight, was more efficient with her punches and smarter in the ring, her excellent physical condition allowed her to be the better fighter throughout the remaining rounds, Gabriels, however was a great test for her and never stopped coming forward.
Gabriels showed she is a strong fighter that gives her all in the ring, but her technical limitations made her inefficient, she landed few punches, wasted energy and by round five it already seemed that the punches were taking a toll on her, breathing heavily through her mouth, she struggled in the second half of the fight.
Even though she lost this fight, the Costa Rican maintains the titles that she currently holds, the WBO (World Boxing Organization) and WBA (Word Boxing Association) Female World Super Welterweight Champion (154 lbs.), this fight was agreed to on a catch weight of 160 lbs., and therefore her titles were not on the line.
Shields remains undefeated, now with a record of 6-0-0, while Gabriels adds a loss to her record to make it 18-2-1.
