The crisis that has affected Nicaragua since mid-April and that has left over 200 deaths, including a 1 ½ year-old baby, according to the Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights (Cenidh), has affected the Central American country not just socially but also economically.

Commerce both in imports and exports has been affected as well as the tourism industry.

Today Volaris airlines, for instance, announced the suspension of its flights from Costa Rica to Nicaragua temporarily and starting July 1st. The company explained that “the conditions of the market do not allow us to maintain this operation”.

Just a few days back the Bureau of Consular Affairs of the United States Department of Sate issued a Level 3 (Reconsider Travel) advisory for Nicaragua due to “crime, civil unrest and limited healthcare availability”.

Hotels, such as Mukul, Auberge Resorts Collection in the city of Rivas, closed their operations. The luxury resort announced its decision due to the lack of tourists and the cancellation by clients of the reservations that had been made months back.

“Unfortunately, the tragic situation that we are living, in addition to filling us with mourn and pain, has deteriorated the country brand of Nicaragua significantly, which has affected the tourism industry which is practically paralyzed. Mukul, Auberge Resorts Collection is no exception. Guests have abandoned the resort and the cancellations are multiplying, to the point that in the last days we have not had one single visitor”, stated the press release.

This unfortunate situation leaves many unemployed people.

In the past days Hotel Seminole part of Albanisa group and the Teodolinda Mansion Hotel also announced the suspension of their operations.
